  • Sovnger - Blake, What I like

Forgettable, loud and obnoxious techno noise but with a cool and crazy video shot in the subway system of Paris, France. Featuring a fast moving and insanely fun relay race, the camera has such an incredibly fast framerate that the fluorescent lights can be seen to be flickering, which would otherwise be imperceptible to the naked eye because of their incredibly high frequency. Ridiculously Awesom... Read More
  • Bloc Party - This Modern Love

It was on an October night, in Paris. We went to a pub, made some noise outside with a German band. Kele, Bloc Party's singer, went out. We asked him to sing. He said no. We asked again, he said 'yes but'. Then, we asked again... Here it is, just one song, an old song, played acoustic for the first time. Read More
  • Phoenix - 1901

"We had been playing cat and mouse for months. We attended the same shows in Paris, talked a little, mentioning maybe we could do something together... to then see them leave, become huge, and even more intriguing, elusive. It took eight months for this Take Away Show to happen, for them to be free just one afternoon despite their super busy Hollywoodian schedule. Read More
  • Caribou - Odessa

If Dan Snaith has mastered one aspect of his music career, it's change. Not the remodeling or renovation sort, more the alterations and adaptations with purpose. The steady upward progression in replayability between 2001's glitchy Start Breaking My Heart and 2005's towering Milk of Human Kindness feels like a problem of some sort was solved. Which makes room for the comparative left-turn of Andor... Read More

philip-glass-symphony-no-3-chaotic-madness-abstract-1Symphony No. 3 (1995) was commissioned by the Würth Foundation for the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra; première February 5, 1995, by the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, Künzelsau, Germany. Composed for the 19 string players of the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, Philip Glass's Symphony No. 3 was designed to treat every musician as a soloist. "The work fell naturally into a four-movement form," Mr. Glass has written, "and even given the nature of the ensemble and solo writing, [it] seems to have the structure of a true symphony."

Mogwai - Mogwai Fear Satan
(7 votes, average 4.86 out of 5)
Saturday, 31 October 2009 15:04

mogwai-fear-satan-groupMogwai Fear Satan is a long guitar-based instrumental, using basic rock instrumentation; guitars, bass, and drums, along with flute that begins with a guitar melody played by Stuart Braithwaite and John Cummings, which is soon joined by bass played by Dominic Aitchison and a frantic drumbeat played by Martin Bulloch, which fades gradually in. The same guitar melody is repeated throughout the song; at times almost frighteningly distorted. During the quiet parts of the song, in the build up to the explosion of sonic noise and feedback which Mogwai are known for, there is a quiet haunting flute melody played by Shona Brown over tribal-sounding drums. The song slowly fades out into feedback and noise.

vio-spilum-endalaust-1A trip across Paris in a van. Lost drumsticks. A cafe you'd never expect to visit before the age of 60. An hour of waiting, and then, voilà - a few notes on the harmonium, a grand piano, a heavenly voice. Sigur Ros on a Take Away Show.

roken-is-dodelijk-1Roken is Dodelijk is a French group from Lille, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, comprising of Jay in Space, on guitar/bass Lena Deluxe on keys/tambourine, Guiguit on bass/harmonica, Nico on drums/glockenspiel and Foux du Fafa on guitar. Explaining their bizarre name: "Roken is Dodelijk". Maybe it’s from an iron will that nobody ever remember what to call them, it means "smoking is dangerous", that’s it.

Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago
(12 votes, average 4.67 out of 5)
Sunday, 04 October 2009 19:23

Bon Iver - For Emma Forever Ago groupIt's hard to believe that the album "For Emma, Forever Ago" is the work of one man. But when Justin Vernon's old band split he hauled himself (and presumably plenty of instruments and recording equipment) to his dad's hunting cabin in the woods of Wisconsin for the coldest season and worked through his issues in musical form. And so the name boniver was borne from the French for "good winter"--"bon hiver". Like Dylan, Justin Vernon aka Bon Iver (it's a one-man show) understands that simple, acoustic-led arrangements married with lyrical depth can really pack a punch.
