royksopp-the-undestandingThe Understanding had a tough task in following Melody AM, the sleeper hit of 2002, but Röyksopp were able to laugh in the face of so-called 'difficult second album syndrome'. The album captures a dreamy vibe which will no doubt find pride of place on a plethora of "post-clubbing chill-out" compilations. The best ingredients of Melody AM are still present - cool, airy textures, frequent hints of wistful melancholy, warm infusions of synthesized chords. But this time those chords have a darker undertone, their harmonic language taking an uneasy turn.

royksopp-only-this-momentThe light, twinkling intro and mellow chords instantly betray that, rather than undertaking a risky re-invention, it is very much business as usual. Understated, angelic vocals, a touch of Balearic guitar, along with the usual dose of sweet melancholy show that, while this is no giant leap forward.
